The SMART Exchange is a free resource center and community network dedicated to technology-enabled learning. You can meet colleagues, share ideas and get answers from SMART experts. Build a unique profile, post comments, check the event calendar and discuss topics that are important to you.

This frequently asked questions page answers some of the most common questions about the SMART Exchange. You can also post questions or report problems in our Help and Welcome Center , and a SMART expert will assist you.
How is this forum moderated?
The SMART Exchange does not have an approval queue for posts. That means that once you have written a post, it will appear immediately. However, a team of SMART experts are here to act as moderators, guiding conversations, replying to questions and listening to comments and feedback.
How to register and log in
Do I need to register to use the forums?
Everyone who visits the SMART Exchange can read the forums. To access all the features of the SMART Exchange, you will need to register as a member. Registration is quick, easy and free – register now.
As a member of the SMART Exchange, you can do the following:
- Post new messages
- Create new threads
- Reply to posts
- Edit your posts
- Be notified of replies to your posts
- Send messages to other members
- Set up a friends list
How do I register?
To create an account, visit our registration page. You will enter details such as your login name, e-mail address and password.
How do I log in?
After you register, you will receive an e-mail confirming your username and password. Once you have received this information, visit the login page and enter your username and password.
I registered but I can’t log in
If you registered and can’t log in, first check that you have a valid username and password. If you are sure the username and password are valid, but still can’t log in, you may need to activate your account by clicking on a link in your confirmation e-mail. If this does not work, your account may be on hold. Contact the SMART Exchange administrator for help.
I forgot my password or username – what can I do?
If you forget your username or password, you can visit the password page to have both your username and new password e-mailed to you by entering the e-mail account you used to register. Once you receive your username and new password, you can log in and change your password.
How do I clear my cookies?
To clear cookies in Internet Explorer 6 on the Windows operating system, follow these steps:
- Click the Tools menu
- Select Internet Options from the menu
- Click Delete Cookies on the dialog box that appears
To clear cookies in Mozilla Firefox, follow these steps:
- Click the Tools menu
- Select Options from the menu
- From the dialog box, select Privacy
- Find cookies on the main pane and click the Clear button
What is a forum?
A forum, also known as a message board or bulletin board, is an online meeting place for discussion of various topics.
What is a thread?
In a forum, a thread is a group of messages that all loosely relate to the same topic.
I’ve never posted before – what should I know?
Here are a few tips to consider before posting:
- Search the SMART Exchange before posting. You may find that your topic or question has already been discussed.
- Familiarize yourself with the basics – read the SMART Exchange frequently asked questions page
- When asking a question, be precise and proofread before posting. This will help people understand your question so they can give you a reply in return.
- When posting, make sure that the subject line describes your topic or problem. Experts in your subject may skim past subject lines like “Urgent" and “Need help ASAP." Use keywords that mention the product or issue instead.
How is the forum organized?
You can read and discuss the following topics:

How do you search the forum?
To search the SMART Exchange, enter your search terms in the upper-right corner of the forum page and click the Search button. A list of results will be returned with the most relevant results at the top of the page.
How do I use the calendar?
To use the calendar, select Calendar from the top of the SMART Exchange homepage. SMART product updates, product releases, trade show appearances and other events will be listed in the monthly calendar. To scroll through the months, click on the arrow buttons at the top of the calendar.
Can I send e-mail to other members?
Yes. To e-mail another SMART Exchange member, click on the member’s name to open the About Me page. Under Options at the bottom of the page, select Send [person] an e-mail.
In the message, you can enter a subject line and write in the message box. Once you have finished, click Send e-mail.
NOTE: If there is no Send e-mail button, it means that the member does not have the e-mail option enabled for the SMART Exchange.
SMART Exchange members can also send private messages.
What is a private message?
A private message is like an e-mail in the SMART Exchange. You can send a private message to other members of the SMART Exchange that only they can see. When you send a private message, your recipient can only see your message and not any of your contact information.
To send a private message, click on the person you want to contact. This will bring up their profile page. Select Send [person] a private message from the profile options.
In the message, you can enter a subject line and write in the message box. Once you have finished, click post.
What is RSS? How do I use it?
RSS stands for really simple syndication. With RSS, you can subscribe to a forum’s posts on the SMART Exchange. This helps you keep up with all your favorite topics by displaying new items from each of them. You will need to download an RSS reader, which can be found on the following sites:
How do I create a thread?
To create a thread in a forum, click the Write a new post button at the upper-left corner of the forum page. Then enter the subject and content of your post.
Once you are finished, click Preview to see what your post will look like or click Post to post your thread in a forum.
How do I reply to a post?
To reply to a post, click the Reply button above the message. This will open a box where you can enter your reply.
Once you are finished, click Preview to see what your reply will look like or click Post to submit your reply.
How do I reply to a poll?
To reply to a poll, choose an option from the list of responses and then click Vote.
Can I edit my posts?
You can edit your posts for a limited amount of time after posting. To edit your post, click the Post button above the message. This will open a box with your original post.
Once you are finished, click Preview to see what your post will look like or click Post to submit it.
How do I delete posts?
To delete your post, click Delete. If a post you have made has one or more replies, you will be able to delete those posts by clicking Delete children.
When deleting a post, you will be asked to provide a reason and then to click Delete post.
What are tags?
When you write a post, you can give it a tag. Tags, which are similar to keywords, help you find posts that have something in common. You can create as many tags as you wish for each post. To tag a post, enter keywords in the tag field found under the message box. If you are creating multiple tags, separate them with a semicolon.
What are smileys?
Give somebody a smile on the SMART Exchange! Smileys are symbols that can be added to a post to represent feelings. To use a smiley, click on the smiling face from the Message toolbar. This will bring up a box with the available smileys. Once you select a smiley, it will be inserted into your post.
How do I rate a thread?
In the upper-left corner of each thread, there is a box with five stars. To rate a thread, move your mouse over the box and highlight the number of stars you would like the thread to receive (one is the lowest rating and five is the highest). Once you have chosen, click on the box again to cast your vote.
Why have some of the words in my post been removed?
Certain words that could be offensive to some are not allowed on the SMART Exchange. If your post contains any of these words, they will be automatically filtered and replaced with “****."

How do I view and edit my profile?
To view your profile and edit settings, select Edit profile from the Help box at the upper-right corner of any SMART Exchange forum page. This will bring up your profile, which has seven areas that can be edited:

Enter a signature or biography that will appear on your posts
Upload a picture for your profile
Set your e-mail options and notifications

How do I add a picture to my profile?
To add a picture, also called an avatar, go to the Edit profile page and select the Avatar menu. Select Yes and use the Browse button to search for a desired picture on your computer. Once you have found it, click Update to add it to your profile and Save.
How do I add a signature or bio to my posts?
In the SMART Exchange, you can add a signature or bio that will appear on all your posts. To add a signature or bio, go to the Edit profile page and select the Signature and bio menu. Input your signature or bio and click Save.
How do I set the date and time?
To set the date and time, go to the Edit profile page and select the Site options menu. To set the time, go to Timezone and select the appropriate time from the menu. To set the date, go to Date format and select the appropriate date from the menu.
How do I change my language?
To change your display language, go to the Edit profile page and select the About me menu. Under Language, select your desired setting from the menu.
How do I turn off e-mail tracking?
E-mail tracking is a feature that sends you e-mails when threads that you are subscribed to change. To turn off e-mail tracking, go to the Edit profile page and select the E-mail menu. To turn off e-mail, select No to enable e-mail notifications of forum/thread subscriptions and replies to my posts.
